SYW Swiss Eptingen - Completed!

I finished my Seven Years War Swiss Eptingen regiment and I couldn't be happier! I thought that they turned out particularly well.

I am especially pleased with the drummer... which you can hardly see in these photos. The lace looks particularly good. I also thought that the arm chevrons turned out well.

The flags are GMB. I really messed up on the one with the cross and the flames. It was so bad that I tried to pull it apart off of the pole... until I started to rip it. I quickly stuck it back together and then did my best to touch up the misaligned edges with paint. It isn't noticeable at all on the table, but if you look closely you'll see it. I guess the moral of the story here is to not mess with the flags too much once the glue is on them. Wait until they dry and then touch them up with paint as best as you can. Finishing the edges hides a lot of mistakes.

The other flag turned out really well! The bottom didn't have the fleur de lis printed to the edge and it looked weird having a blank white stripe down there. So I took some grey and a small brush and painted them in. Then I put a little bit of yellowish tan in there to give them some color. They blend in very will the other fleur de lis on the banner.

I need to give thanks to my friends Ioannis from Leuthen Journal fame, as well as Michael Davis of Horse & Musket, for providing me immeasurable advice and assistance in the creation of this unit. Without their timely responses to my innumerable questions I would not have been able to complete this unit. Any errors are entirely of my own doing. I doff my tricorn to you both!

    1. Hi Dean! The Front Rank figures make it really easy to pick out the eyes, nose and other bits on the face. They are a joy to paint up and I can't recommend them enough. The real kick in the pants is when the GMB flags are added. It takes everything to a whole new level!

  3. Wonderful, really wonderful, Jeff!! Thanks for your reply the last time. I had a question about the yellow cuffs: you did them so splendidly with a fine dark shadow around the buttons. Could you tell me how you do that?
    Thank you in advance, Peter

    1. Peter - I'd be happy to! As you may know this regiment was painted with the idea that I only needed 13 or so paint colors to do the whole thing. I just happened to pick GW colors as they were readily available. The base color was the key. As I recall it needed 2-3 coats to become a smooth background for the mid-tones and highlights. As I moved through to brighter colors I made sure to leave some of the previous darker layers showing.

The Yellow Lapels are primed in black with Armory Black Spray Primer.
Base - Yriel Yellow 1:1 Tau Light Ochre (almost a tan color)
Mid - Yriel Yellow (a warm yellow)
Highlight - Flash Gitz Yellow (a bright, cool yellow)

Around the buttons is the base tan color and the button itself is a black nub that I hit with silver... that leaves a circle of black around it.
I hope that answers your question. Let me know if I could be of more help!

    2. Aah, yes, I understand that now! I have such a nub from women cosmetics - a metal pen with a round tip for making round points on nails. That could be useful.
Thank you so much, Jeff! I really appreciate your help. Will try it today!!

    3. Peter - I think that I have made myself somewhat unclear. I'm sorry about that. The buttons are a nubs sculpted on the figure itself. I only use a brush when I paint (generally a Rapael 8404). I paint the button with a dot of silver. That leaves a ring of black primer at the base. Sorry for the confusion. I hope this clarifies things a bit. - Jeff

  4. Wonderful work on these figures. I'm about to try out some Napoleonic Front Rank figurines after having heard so much good about their sculpts.

    1. Thanks Monty! I'm glad that you like them. I have not tried the Napoleonics from Front Rank. You'll have to let me know what you think of them. Next up for me are some SYW Prussian Fusiliers from Crusader. I am very, very excited to get working on those! - Jeff

  5. Very nice painting, inspiring! How do you like Maurice for rules?

    1. Noss - Thanks for the comment! I really like Maurice a great deal. If you click on the "Maurice" tag on this blog you'll see a little mini-scenario we played with a few units on each side. Even though it was a little skirmish, it still had all sorts of twists and turns of fate. Michael said it captured the feel of the period, and I believe him!

I can't recommend Maurice enough. How can you not like a game that features a card called: "O the gout, the gout"? Aha ha ha! I love it!

    1. Michael - Thank you again for all of your help. I wouldn't have been able to get them over the finish line without it!

  7. Hey! They look wonderful! But i'm not sure about the colors: usually the Rgt Eptingen was red/white as seen here: http://lasabretache.fr/les-aquarelles-dalbert-escher/eptingen/
Few years ago we did some copies of the uniforms: http://www.militariahelvetica.ch/sjo/images/lightbox/image01.jpg. Now we do some more, thats why I do some more research.
    Still very well done.
    Greetings Cédric
