Winter War Soviets - Snow Base Tutorial

When I approached the snow bases I wanted to give them an icy, translucent effect along with a powdering of new, white snow.

In the above picture the white is somewhat blown out. The icy effect is more pronounced in person. This is how I did it:
  1. Paint the base Reaper MSP HD Ruddy Brown
  2. Use a thick super glue (I used Gorilla brand) and generously add it to the base
  3. An unbent paper clip comes in handy to push the glue around to ensure coverage
  4. Sprinkle baking soda from the top of the figure (don't dunk it as the glue and soda react and make a weird wave effect) and shake off the excess
  5. It dries instantly so it is easy to repeat two or three times to bulk up the low areas
  6. Add dabs of a clear glue and water mixture (I used Scotch Scrapbooker's Glue) 1:1 and dab it on the base where you want white snow
  7. Dunk in Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow and let dry
You end up with the brown showing through the icy baking soda areas and the look of patches of snow. It adds some depth and interest to the base which I like more than a uniform white. It isn't pristine; it looks like the snow has been tromped over a bit. I just finished another six figures and they look great together on the table. The bases (and figures) en masse are even better than they are individually!

The basing really makes these 20mm figures pop. It elevates a good paintjob and makes it much better.

    Thanks for the comment!
