Commands & Colors: Ancients Epic
On our last Craft Day we gathered around the table and decided to play an Epic game of Commands & Colors: Ancients. We positioned the two boards together and made a huge battlefield! Look at all of those troops lined up! Michael and I teamed together to face William the Unconquerable. It was an even match. Our fearless infantry and cavalry were arrayed before us!
Our initial plan was to hold the left and have the right charge forward and then roll the enemy's flank. Our clever opponent put that strategy to waste by attacking both of our flanks on his first turn. His archers and light cavalry inflicted casualties and our troops were in disarray.
After a few exchanges of blows in subsequent turns, the gods began to favor our cause. We dressed our lines and closed ranks. Our troops had grown weary of our opponent’s ranged and hit-and-run attacks. Equipment was cinched tight and swords were drawn as we began our advance to come to grips with our foe.
In subsequent turns we were able to surge forward with large portions of our troops. Swords and shields clashed as our heavy infantry pushed into the enemy’s lines. Our foe fell before us; his units crumbled and fled.
In the end we won the day! Commands & Colors: Ancients is an incredibly fun game that rewards solid strategy and clever tactics. Even though I love gaming with miniatures, the little blocks on the board capture the feel of ancient battles being fought much better that I had anticipated. It was a lot of fun to push them around the board and watch the ebb and flow of the game. I just wish that GMT would keep these sets in print!
If you haven’t tried Commands & Colors: Ancients you owe it to yourself to grab the basic boxed set and have a go.
I agree with you 100%. In fact I liked it so much I ordered a game mat from Hotz Mats specifically for C&C with 4inch hexes.

That Hotz Mat sounds really neat! I think that this game would be even more fun with miniatures. I saw that someone had done something with hex terrain and 10mm or 15mm figures on the internet.

Squadpainter, I checked out Game Empire earlier in week for the Army Painter, but they didn't have it. No big, I'll just order it on line. It was interesting looking around Game Empire. I saw a lot of stuff I had only seen on line, like the FOW product line. I have been going to Discount Hobby for last couple years, and almost all of my hobby inventory is from there. I find their prices competitive with the stores on line and I like supporting local stores. looks like household projects are trumping army building for now. Thanks again for all the info. Tank Taco
ReplyDeleteTank Taco - Game Empire is definitely more "gamey" than Discount Hobbies. But they do have interesting things in there like Vallejo Paints, Army Painter and FoW sprays, etc. that you can't find at DH. I think that both stores compliment each other nicely.
DeleteI also agree with you: supporting local business is always the way to go. I always check GE and DH before I order through Michigan Toy Soldier.
