Frostgrave Soldiers - Review

I picked up a box of plastic Frostgrave Soldiers a while back from Northstar Miniatures and I'm so pleased that I did.
For those of you who are not familiar with Osprey Games' Frostgrave, it is a fantasy skirmish game that takes place in a thawing wasteland. Wizards lead bands of mercenaries on perilous missions to extract valuable ancient artifacts from the frozen realm. You battle with other players' warbands, wandering monsters, traps, etc. The rules were a surprise hit and new supplements are released regularly. Some say it is even better than Mordheim!

The box contains 20 figures to be used as hired troops which is way more figures than you'd need for a warband (two wizards and 8 mercenaries). Players should split a box with a friend.

The box contains:
  • 20 bodies
  • 40 heads
  • 4 helmets
  • 4 lanterns
  • 4 torches
  • 8 quivers
  • 8 bows
  • 4 ropes
  • 4 sacks
  • 4 bags of bolts
  • 8 arms with crossbows
  • 4 satchels
  • 4 more ropes
  • 4 arms with mace
  • 4 arms with dagger
  • 12 arms with sword
  • 4 arms with huge sword
  • 4 arms with axe
  • 4 arms with big axe
  • 8 pouches
  • 8 shields
  • 40 open-handed arms

As you can see from the pictures, the sculpts are great and the variety of possible troop types, weapon load-outs, and poses is fantastic; you'll have a ton of bits left over to convert other miniatures. I can't recommend this box enough... even if you don't play Frostgrave. These models could be used in any fantasy setting such as Pathfinder or Dungeons & Dragons. If you can't find them locally, check eBay!

  1. They do like nice. Do you think they could accommodate 40K lasgun arms? I’m more of a sci fi chap but would like to use these as a militia of some kind hopefully!

  2. They are a decent size, but I don't know if they would fit the 40K scale as I don't have any Imperial Guard miniatures. Instead of picking up an entire box, just grab a sprue of Frostgrave Soldiers off of eBay and see if that works for you. That way you'll be sure. If the lasgun arms are a little long, I'll bet that they can be filed down a bit at the shoulder to fit. There are a lot of fun bits to use on a FG Soldier's sprue!
