SYW Swiss Eptingen - Almost Done

I have finished the other troops in this regiment (well, they only need their buttons and buckles done). The only figure that needs a bit more attention is the drummer. I have to put white on the lace, finish the drum, varnish and then paint the metal buckles and buttons.

The drummer is turning out better than I expected. The Raphael 8404 size 00 brush is making the lace easy. Choosing to paint black under the arm chevrons turned out to be a wise choice. It really makes them pop off of the figure and it also was helpful in deciding on the spacing of the chevrons... like I was sketching them in first.

I can't decide if I am going to dot the lace with just red, or with a dark red and a highlighted red. Will it make a difference at such a small size? I am also not sure about all of the small yellow dots on the white lace; will they show up at such a small amount? Should I first dot them with a brown and then a light yellow to make them show up? Should I just leave them out? The arm chevrons look really good as they are.

Once I am done with the final bits they'll get based up and I'll add their flags. I'll post pictures of the completed regiment when I'm done.

  1. The figures look fantastic. I like the Swiss regiments very much as they bring a lot of color to the French troops.
In my opinion if you want to dot the lace you should do that with a dark red and then with highlighted red. It won´t make a difference for other people but if you are having a closer look at the figures you may ask the same question to yourself and you will be proud that you decided to do it with highlighted red afterwards.
The drummers of the French army are always a torture to paint. You did a very good paint job on this figure (also on the other ones) and I´m sure this regiment will look great.
    Hope to see more soon.

    1. Fritz II - Thank you for the compliments! I kind of stumbled into the Swiss as I ordered the figures with the lapels and cuffs... and then realized that hardly any of the French troops sported that look. Oops. But I'm glad that I found this regiment; their uniforms are great and their flags are amazing!

I think that I will dot in the dark red first and then the highlight. That's good advice. Now I'm still on the fence about where to put the yellow dots. It is definitely going on the drummer's strap. The questions surround the cuffs, main jacket piping and the arm chevrons.

I did the drum and it turned out pretty well!

    1. Thanks Dean! I am enjoying all of the intricacies of painting Seven Years War figures. There is a lot of detail to pick out. It isn't fast, but it is rewarding!

    1. Phil - I was reluctant to paint a unit with those traditionally difficult colors. Yellow and red can be such a pain to cover over black. But mixing brown into the base of each alleviated that problem.
They will look even better once I get them based up with their standards! Thanks for reading, and thanks for the comment! - Jeff

  4. Great inspiration. I like your style of painting very much - oftenly I look to your images to learn how you paint. And the Swiss are a good idea. They will be my next painting job!

    1. Peter - Thank you very much! For this style of painting I use the Kevin Dallimore / Foundry style. Their base-color-highlight technique makes beautiful miniatures! If you have any questions about your painting that I might be able to answer, feel free to post them here. Thanks again for reading and commenting!
