I like this image as it shows the forward rank of pike at the ready. The figures look animated on the base.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsXR5pvkyC8nLYc3sGDz8clRKMsiEApFmSMN_gwqKhQkfJFjS1xJal3Zqs8rYAR_GXVgqdeOPIpDc9bE0SlpRD0myfZ7BvsapgwApnDkrhDc_C94B0AbrQICLTpWlboFT_o0FfVwlmRcvOQWfPeGHfrbIFUnT_gjkBGjA-5OGvtlyFPZ7vhAVbTdM8w0/s1280/SquadPainterWarlordECW6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Squadpainter Warlord ECW Pike & Shotte Epic based and painted with pikes aggressively forward" border="0" data-original-height="874" data-original-width="1280" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsXR5pvkyC8nLYc3sGDz8clRKMsiEApFmSMN_gwqKhQkfJFjS1xJal3Zqs8rYAR_GXVgqdeOPIpDc9bE0SlpRD0myfZ7BvsapgwApnDkrhDc_C94B0AbrQICLTpWlboFT_o0FfVwlmRcvOQWfPeGHfrbIFUnT_gjkBGjA-5OGvtlyFPZ7vhAVbTdM8w0/w320-h219/SquadPainterWarlordECW6.png" title="English Civil War infantry at the ready" width="320" /></a></div>Warlord did a good job with these figures, especially the pike. The forward pikes are lowering, flags are snapping in the middle of the block, and the rear ranks are almost in line.<div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Keep Painting</h3><div>They'll look great on the table. It's heaven for serious miniature painters!<div><br /></div><div>While I was there emptying my wallet, I saw that they had a small box of 15mm casualty tokens made by Warlord for their Epic <i>Pike & Shotte</i> game. My favorite figure is the unhorsed cavalryman with the tri-bar helmet (#3) on the right. They scale perfectly with the Warlord 15mm plastics and my Steel Fist 15mm ECW figures.</div><div><br /></div><div>These will look great on the table and be far more storyful than a d6. I wanted my infantry to look like John Sturt's <a href="https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1265080/battle-of-naseby-print-john-sturt/" target="_blank">illustration of the Battle of Naseby</a>, so I had to square up the Warlord strips and snip a few off the sides. I've been keeping my <a href="http://squadpainter.blogspot.com/2022/03/basing-steel-fist-miniatures.html" target="_blank">Steel Fist</a> <a href="http://squadpainter.blogspot.com/search/label/15mm" target="_blank">15mm figures</a> in my back pocket, waiting for a good opportunity to get started.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Warlord Epic Pike & Shotte</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx042X0bwxuT0MaWFkaYzQ_8zMJa6H3OvTQAHRoOzPxucTQNAAQcDYxbhqjTCT6jkUTmNhpyT7M4V_sH1E2vcfkihdNQNxRls3_TmWXZATD1HDBs6G6MF6CsDsTp59GqWIOnEhRIUiiG5L4bXQYDWDNV-JiSTPXZSHX2_wm34DH7Hrn-H9rEIXKZ6fVl4/s640/EpicShotte1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Warlord Games Epic Pike & Shotte Speed Painted SquadPainter 15mm" border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="483" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx042X0bwxuT0MaWFkaYzQ_8zMJa6H3OvTQAHRoOzPxucTQNAAQcDYxbhqjTCT6jkUTmNhpyT7M4V_sH1E2vcfkihdNQNxRls3_TmWXZATD1HDBs6G6MF6CsDsTp59GqWIOnEhRIUiiG5L4bXQYDWDNV-JiSTPXZSHX2_wm34DH7Hrn-H9rEIXKZ6fVl4/w242-h320/EpicShotte1.png" width="242" /></a></div><br /><p>That opportunity arrived after I picked up a Warlord Games' Epic Pike & Shotte Batallia box at Historicon in Lancaster. Inside were three sprues of true 15mm ECW infantry for a total of 240 figures. They are modeled in strips of 10 figures each standing shoulder-to-shoulder.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Speed Painting</h2><p>I followed Miniature Realms' <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSJV5fEqIJs" target="_blank">playbook</a> and used Contrast Paints over a dark gray prime > light gray zenithal prime > white drybrushed figure. Then I used Contrast Paints for everything. I departed from his method when I painted the metal; he used the hard to find Scalecolor Black Metal. I used GW Contrast Black Legion and then when dry, hit it with Army Painter's Gun Metal. I like having a thin black line around my metallics and this combination gave me that look.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO-nhtBR1siJ_ACfopjl5nvt_HS8F0em7lPw07bQWGmsvFrOfc4hyagCU9V3v97d-f7emFurT1hY6KIdxkmLGdjXxBZKzVpo6fr-7-r7euwkmZftMBZnw4gvzhn0ao76yGKwhXx-8UpxLEYOSOo2FbnmvrXwrY-W7y-pXDM2Yecwhu3-MCYyISWfOGhSQ/s640/EpicShotte2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="15mm English Civil War ECW SquadPainter painted with Contrast Paints" border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="433" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO-nhtBR1siJ_ACfopjl5nvt_HS8F0em7lPw07bQWGmsvFrOfc4hyagCU9V3v97d-f7emFurT1hY6KIdxkmLGdjXxBZKzVpo6fr-7-r7euwkmZftMBZnw4gvzhn0ao76yGKwhXx-8UpxLEYOSOo2FbnmvrXwrY-W7y-pXDM2Yecwhu3-MCYyISWfOGhSQ/w217-h320/EpicShotte2.png" width="217" /></a></div><br /><p>There are no highlights on these figures. I decided to remedy that with some splendid cavalry from Bicorne's 28mm line. My first decision was to paint the riders with the horses. I wanted the crevasses between the rider and horse to fill with shadow and wash, so I mounted them together before priming.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HeiPQ61c2kUA0QBoj2WAbh5dmRCpB33qFVKI4gLSRb6CTiGFGMPntiQ5HiAkACLuyFnBQbJUhuSZFFCY1GI4cDreBhes7Jxn8YM3gQYI8vu42a-HDdZIzjuqkE_QFBkeNWG9nfNKq0abKL-JOsncpUsJC1HYP2TjKyce564cyhcD7TX0H52nsyAn/s3696/IMG_3865.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Squadpainter's base colors on Bicorne's ECW cavalry" border="0" data-original-height="1787" data-original-width="3696" height="155" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HeiPQ61c2kUA0QBoj2WAbh5dmRCpB33qFVKI4gLSRb6CTiGFGMPntiQ5HiAkACLuyFnBQbJUhuSZFFCY1GI4cDreBhes7Jxn8YM3gQYI8vu42a-HDdZIzjuqkE_QFBkeNWG9nfNKq0abKL-JOsncpUsJC1HYP2TjKyce564cyhcD7TX0H52nsyAn/w320-h155/IMG_3865.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Mounting Riders Onto Their Horses</h3><p>I had some trouble mounting them until I read about pinning with green stuff. That made it easy. I drilled out the rider and the saddle. Then I clipped a paper clip to the proper length. I put some drops of Loctite Ultragel Control Super Glue in the holes and made a small ball of greenstuff. Then I smooshed them together. The greenstuff held the rider in place while everything set. I liked that I could make fine adjustments to their positioning. I waited 24 hours to let everything dry. Next I primed them up and used some color mixes from the excellent <a href="https://www.1898miniaturas.com/en/modeling-and-painting/" target="_blank">1898 Miniatures site</a>.</p><p>They look good so far.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg19WukAFkmzL3h7ADWe2mkKWIVnWSzJC43iBoZZDAXEf1RDNpArELYPNYfcWfCrh4oNuZxHmVxyErZAkMo_ipyhGdFYdhBwWpnKScgQWecdt-dAmf1LvLa1eAH1oDnzv1gLgWHeZEbV0KJmv2RIlqdE7wiWRasXKqJo-B8-KWwJGwTW7hF2d3MkH1e/s3157/IMG_3811.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bicorne English Civil War 28mm cavalry assembled and primed white" border="0" data-original-height="1692" data-original-width="3157" height="172" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg19WukAFkmzL3h7ADWe2mkKWIVnWSzJC43iBoZZDAXEf1RDNpArELYPNYfcWfCrh4oNuZxHmVxyErZAkMo_ipyhGdFYdhBwWpnKScgQWecdt-dAmf1LvLa1eAH1oDnzv1gLgWHeZEbV0KJmv2RIlqdE7wiWRasXKqJo-B8-KWwJGwTW7hF2d3MkH1e/w320-h172/IMG_3811.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhglCaD_bcDHDW1mcOFbO0h0HIgEBKRyd2DuCCHkkTuoFPjzcY5aMJUHc-FcKmnuPxGPcLUcRD2xrOtgUNGHDNfXHAp30UEMgqxZg7cCMTdKXZE6rAu5i8HKs9BEUV28_7GFvtydADTIM0M5k01zL9UUiiYRfi9Ig3Vrmlx2o_BZbVhZDhnDCHAd1P1/s2966/IMG_3846.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Vallejo Model Color painted onto ECW 28mm miniature wargame cavalry" border="0" data-original-height="1622" data-original-width="2966" height="175" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhglCaD_bcDHDW1mcOFbO0h0HIgEBKRyd2DuCCHkkTuoFPjzcY5aMJUHc-FcKmnuPxGPcLUcRD2xrOtgUNGHDNfXHAp30UEMgqxZg7cCMTdKXZE6rAu5i8HKs9BEUV28_7GFvtydADTIM0M5k01zL9UUiiYRfi9Ig3Vrmlx2o_BZbVhZDhnDCHAd1P1/w320-h175/IMG_3846.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I'll share some pictures of them in my next post after I apply the wash and add a few highlights. </p><p><b>Happy New Year!</b></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-82512470401558065492022-09-09T10:13:00.007-07:002022-09-09T10:19:49.261-07:00ECW Warlord Green Test Figure Completed<p>In my <a href="http://squadpainter.blogspot.com/2022/08/english-civil-war-shotte-mixing-green.html" target="_blank">previous post</a> I sorted out what green I wanted for the coat by mixing up a few different hues from various GW Contrast Paints. Once I puzzled that out, it was time to take one of the miniatures over the finish line.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XFuD_FF72X8DrS2xv_PHNxVhhOHgxUSWLLwOVQhd9hABSBl70FqDZ4P8MxgqBSHU6I_b1xLGbcLwVtta2IjuLnsbdoXn1j5W2n0-x6bebgxgF4WmT9sLj8UK7T6DgLNcXewlG7NAsJEre1uY7D7V2GyrMQSuK08ZrlXQKe_jgvBm5NdPLziphbMl/s1590/A7430D48-BEC2-409C-B707-9B3ABDE263F6.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="English Civil War Musketeer in Green Coat painted with Contrast Paints" border="0" data-original-height="1590" data-original-width="1508" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XFuD_FF72X8DrS2xv_PHNxVhhOHgxUSWLLwOVQhd9hABSBl70FqDZ4P8MxgqBSHU6I_b1xLGbcLwVtta2IjuLnsbdoXn1j5W2n0-x6bebgxgF4WmT9sLj8UK7T6DgLNcXewlG7NAsJEre1uY7D7V2GyrMQSuK08ZrlXQKe_jgvBm5NdPLziphbMl/w303-h320/A7430D48-BEC2-409C-B707-9B3ABDE263F6.jpeg" width="303" /></a></div><br /><p>Everything was completed with Games Workshop Contrast Paints with the exception of the metals (Vallejo black, then Army Painter Plate Mail), the green line highlights on the coat, and the dots of white on the frilly cuffs.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Speed Painting with One Coat of Color</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK0Wy9rXMvNeeLEfwgT5vpsVKxHc6eYsCkGCks41C9oj0-eGgLEkZ-n7gVk_KDTExuwJZrLCY8Ppk9SZEqr76p1CB26P7Hg2D-bsZG7yTggdwy8RW8Afs_G215ahTSFclP-c-Vpah7j0PmvV8Sp4WvfBEZUWd7QK2a2_Kd6zWa6w81pnM6DQ5jb9pH/s1703/6620C9AD-FD28-4847-8CCD-D2A80394788F.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Speed Painting Historical Miniatures with GW Contrast Paints ECW" border="0" data-original-height="1664" data-original-width="1703" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK0Wy9rXMvNeeLEfwgT5vpsVKxHc6eYsCkGCks41C9oj0-eGgLEkZ-n7gVk_KDTExuwJZrLCY8Ppk9SZEqr76p1CB26P7Hg2D-bsZG7yTggdwy8RW8Afs_G215ahTSFclP-c-Vpah7j0PmvV8Sp4WvfBEZUWd7QK2a2_Kd6zWa6w81pnM6DQ5jb9pH/w320-h313/6620C9AD-FD28-4847-8CCD-D2A80394788F.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Everything else was a single coat of Contrast Paint. The GW CP Apothecary White on the bag and frilly cuffs shaded well.</p><p>I was able to finish this figure in no time at all. Only having to paint 90% of the miniature with one coat of paint is a great way to quickly get figures on the table. I decided the main color of this unit should be green.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz1l74-r3Ys3RXk_0pEOux5a-S_bS-HGRq_sealQw8CdptxcSzE1SigkdKisR_cVE9Ffxe6BpGAq8tBtg73XC8JrtXm3syUSYg6lqa48lCRsHxGw7Fub5wRElMWYAbscriHb-htF2eA3Adk1a8o3mo9iwG_9P19kNnuLnFRlsy5MmUvJP4bJxWugA4/s4032/IMG_3605.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Different mixes and combinations of GW Green Contrast Paints on English Civil War shotte" border="0" data-original-height="1587" data-original-width="4032" height="126" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz1l74-r3Ys3RXk_0pEOux5a-S_bS-HGRq_sealQw8CdptxcSzE1SigkdKisR_cVE9Ffxe6BpGAq8tBtg73XC8JrtXm3syUSYg6lqa48lCRsHxGw7Fub5wRElMWYAbscriHb-htF2eA3Adk1a8o3mo9iwG_9P19kNnuLnFRlsy5MmUvJP4bJxWugA4/w320-h126/IMG_3605.png" width="320" /></a></div><p>As with the other colors, I wasn't convinced that the Games Workshop Contrast green paints would work for me straight out of the pot. They were either too bright and emerald-like or way too dark. I wanted a toned down green. </p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Different Mixes of Contrast Paint Greens</h2><p>The greens on the right were various combinations of CP Creed Camo and CP Ork Flesh. They were very, very close... but still a little too yellow-green. I wanted a blue-green. </p><p>I decided to try one of the darker greensand mix it with Contrast Medium. Eureka! Mixing<b> CP Dark Angels Green 1:1 with Contrast Medium</b> was perfect! You can see it on the leftmost figure.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8g3wUr1NufAM_r_h-KvymqCwettRvwMS-0_xib2j-KAWNGQarJI3bzyTVsV-y9c4A-oKe3Zbuu41rBk7AZ1J0L6Bv7NmUPFgBN1YSWrRWb5ILl4_rbYVJJNvd-rTr3eW3u5mPxPZOGZTqQEf9CbR_NP_8BkuPib-N88tuUpHHT_SFCUuV5HygV8pY/s3876/FCEE7865-6B6E-43AE-9218-65BE7B2E4FFB_1_201_a.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Dark Angels Green Contrast Paint thinned 1:1 with Contrast Medium on 28mm Warlord Plastic shotte" border="0" data-original-height="1382" data-original-width="3876" height="114" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8g3wUr1NufAM_r_h-KvymqCwettRvwMS-0_xib2j-KAWNGQarJI3bzyTVsV-y9c4A-oKe3Zbuu41rBk7AZ1J0L6Bv7NmUPFgBN1YSWrRWb5ILl4_rbYVJJNvd-rTr3eW3u5mPxPZOGZTqQEf9CbR_NP_8BkuPib-N88tuUpHHT_SFCUuV5HygV8pY/w320-h114/FCEE7865-6B6E-43AE-9218-65BE7B2E4FFB_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><p>This was the green that I was searching for. Now that I have the color, it's time to do the rest of the figures.</p><p>After I'm done with this unit, I'll have 3 units of shotte and one unit of pike for my forthcoming games of <b>Pikeman's Lament</b>. Waiting in the wings is a unit of 6 Bicorne horse and a box of metal Warlord pike. I've never painted cavalry before, so that might be fun to do next. </p><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-64314274038454752142022-08-08T21:30:00.002-07:002022-08-11T04:46:09.175-07:00ECW Pikemen Painted with Contrast Paint<p>Here is my finished unit of Warlord Pikemen painted up with Games Workshop Blue Contrast paints.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiREOQB_0takkNdGA-NLUOtArgcdJoN-TmGhY0EQxM66XoXreWqUucDLNaWaL6ScfAi3nqwwWYDqEyurNVpKpbfY1EG_Sv3vJTuDN86DxOyNnstIFp7xORKw92sHCSy45udPk_qf6UUF45-Cas4CDE1q_P_JE_8swd-k6GZF2APn0xZ47smJK5zE-DW/s4032/688A649F-032D-4AAF-BD6A-635B7500968D_1_201_a.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Warlord Plastic Pike & Shotte GW Contrast Paints SquadPainter" border="0" data-original-height="2119" data-original-width="4032" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiREOQB_0takkNdGA-NLUOtArgcdJoN-TmGhY0EQxM66XoXreWqUucDLNaWaL6ScfAi3nqwwWYDqEyurNVpKpbfY1EG_Sv3vJTuDN86DxOyNnstIFp7xORKw92sHCSy45udPk_qf6UUF45-Cas4CDE1q_P_JE_8swd-k6GZF2APn0xZ47smJK5zE-DW/w320-h168/688A649F-032D-4AAF-BD6A-635B7500968D_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They were quick to paint up and look good en masse. I drybrushed the figures after the primer dried with pure white from Vallejo to make the edges pop.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Mixing Contrast Paints</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTzN8aD71hSYuh1LV58X8hQYui6HKt846W_zNP2HKwPutbK_YsWlI24Gs-rNehCaeHz3lUry3javFuLNnNgpJiP_NUp3J3VTRZFX6YysHADWy4ThMb6Bnzp1OBwHMI-hPmkEBmga3rJD8R6m8yXFk3jQGvjLxMsFAKoL7vMcnTHKFgtNAQTy5RCQFT/s2098/E902C2BD-9113-4789-9A27-532B44458274_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="SquadPainter Talassar Blue Pikeman Contrast Historical Speed Painting Miniatures Tutorial" border="0" data-original-height="1482" data-original-width="2098" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTzN8aD71hSYuh1LV58X8hQYui6HKt846W_zNP2HKwPutbK_YsWlI24Gs-rNehCaeHz3lUry3javFuLNnNgpJiP_NUp3J3VTRZFX6YysHADWy4ThMb6Bnzp1OBwHMI-hPmkEBmga3rJD8R6m8yXFk3jQGvjLxMsFAKoL7vMcnTHKFgtNAQTy5RCQFT/w320-h226/E902C2BD-9113-4789-9A27-532B44458274_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Contrast Paint blues out of the pots didn't work for me. I edge highlighted the lower part, and for the upper shoulders I tried a stippling effect.</p><p>The dotting did a great job of integrating the highlight with the Contrast Paint underneath. It isn't in these photos, but it didn't take much time and made the coats look great. Taking some extra time to highlight an item or two makes sense as these details sell a figure; it makes it look like I spent way more time on it than I actually did. Also, I finished up this unit so quickly that I felt guilty and wanted to add some finishing touches.</p><p>Anything with a lot of detail such as the shoes, hats, back of the pants, hair, socks, etc. doesn't need added highlights as the Contrast Paints already did the work for me. However, the coats are smooth, flat surfaces that need some help. The Hot Orange did the trick and took less than 10 minutes for the whole unit.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Final Bits</h3><p>I'll dot the musket cord with an ivory color and paint in the metallics with Army Painter metallics next, base them up and shoot some more pictures.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Recruiting More Troops</h3><p>My next troops will be a unit of pikemen. I'll use Contrast Paints again, but with different uniform colors... I want to try out the blue paints next.</p><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-19736320923786845372022-07-17T04:28:00.001-07:002022-07-17T04:28:00.151-07:00Speed Painting Warlord Pike & Shotte<p>Here is my first test figure completed in less time than I could imagine. Everything had one coat of paint, with the exception of the metals and cuffs. Look at the work the Contrast Black Templar did on the hair and mustache. The skin looks great and it's perfectly shaded with Contrast Gulliman Flesh over the Wraithbone spray primer.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc_9z1H4FJ91eHh4iYPRUAo4327QzllKSFY79v-MyjXDHJdre6AkPS-jeix-Fmg3zcfMr9kyzgITAEVaVRJQ9DuMShMQwM77bt5VDxRGknrmb2gVEjH2sPnfHknuKZC_rRc38ALSEfR4xr2CF1mt7UA1sj5nvMYeTZnrGGckrdU9cgX7zEEkcmdD02/s1775/40266D75-87AB-4378-BFED-0C5AF4AD22C7_1_201_a.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Warlord Pike & Shotte Speed Painting SquadPainter Black Templar Historical" border="0" data-original-height="1775" data-original-width="1571" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc_9z1H4FJ91eHh4iYPRUAo4327QzllKSFY79v-MyjXDHJdre6AkPS-jeix-Fmg3zcfMr9kyzgITAEVaVRJQ9DuMShMQwM77bt5VDxRGknrmb2gVEjH2sPnfHknuKZC_rRc38ALSEfR4xr2CF1mt7UA1sj5nvMYeTZnrGGckrdU9cgX7zEEkcmdD02/w283-h320/40266D75-87AB-4378-BFED-0C5AF4AD22C7_1_201_a.heic" width="283" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>When you don't have to paint everything 2-3 times things move at a quick pace. There is some blotchiness on the color, but that is due to my learning how to use the paints properly. Like anything, there's always a trick or two to learn.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Little Gems</h3><p>The figures look different than those painted with regular acrylics; they appear as if they were painted with watercolors. It's not good or bad, just different. As with watercolor painting, the blends are effortless: the paint does the work. Also, the figures are very bright compared to other's that I've completed. They look like little gems in my figure case.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUxkUhq2ljWjI1Itme7kqPou7F-xY2E9QmHcqvr6kfV_5R6OAV49e134AwTs46TxSuPga6BOGKwN-iHGMxpNBGLJxqiV1fQ6mPu-3H2-aR4zT5BZw2d3Z_RVGnMH0aApEQAW0luANgBSYb7LizBfSinXMRdAxqMwGIrZvh2V5v4R2Zv4roQfxoH4Ny/s1706/D33D0607-1A48-4857-83D7-7C5C6644CE2E_1_201_a.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Speed Painting tutorial SquadPainter English Civil War Warlord 28mm Miniatures" border="0" data-original-height="1706" data-original-width="1473" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUxkUhq2ljWjI1Itme7kqPou7F-xY2E9QmHcqvr6kfV_5R6OAV49e134AwTs46TxSuPga6BOGKwN-iHGMxpNBGLJxqiV1fQ6mPu-3H2-aR4zT5BZw2d3Z_RVGnMH0aApEQAW0luANgBSYb7LizBfSinXMRdAxqMwGIrZvh2V5v4R2Zv4roQfxoH4Ny/w276-h320/D33D0607-1A48-4857-83D7-7C5C6644CE2E_1_201_a.heic" width="276" /></a></div><br /><p>The figure above is almost completed. There's a slightly different painting order when using Contrast paints. Normally you go from the inside to out, but with CPs sometimes it's easier to do the belting and straps first... then clean up errors and finally do the coats, etc. Interesting!</p><p>Later on I decided to quickly highlight the red coat. I'll put pictures up of that soon, along with the rest of the completed unit.</p><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-73271517242766248472022-07-11T18:41:00.003-07:002022-07-13T11:18:04.046-07:00Contrast Paints on English Civil War MinisI took the speed of my recent Napoleonic Contrast Paint efforts and combined it with my recent ECW miniature painting. Will this mix be chocolate and peanut butter... or breakfast cereal with water?<h3 style="text-align: left;">Early Success</h3><div>I primed the figures with GW spray Wraithbone. This primer is slightly off-white and leans toward ivory. After the primer dried, the shoes, straps, pants and socks were quickly painted with a large brush. Each only required a single coat of GW Contrast Paint.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9l-NfqtfdKnQVCF0XnNTm2k0tXLeYZIfotpcaiN_-QA869SPwKa3tDr4RGONyCng0jYiO5NsbV6mS8kOusSn0uczmTnEaEPv2f2GBed7rcfmkFE4Jdh9jk7r51t9i-ibUw2k_di4eI6_1BFLo7mywRVLXyAgIrQQuB80Bu_ekR_laydufLDkobgOW/s2777/E0597303-FC3C-4D42-B0A4-476D15AC6A66_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="SquadPainter ECW Shotte Contrast Paints Historical tutorial step by step" border="0" data-original-height="981" data-original-width="2777" height="113" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9l-NfqtfdKnQVCF0XnNTm2k0tXLeYZIfotpcaiN_-QA869SPwKa3tDr4RGONyCng0jYiO5NsbV6mS8kOusSn0uczmTnEaEPv2f2GBed7rcfmkFE4Jdh9jk7r51t9i-ibUw2k_di4eI6_1BFLo7mywRVLXyAgIrQQuB80Bu_ekR_laydufLDkobgOW/w320-h113/E0597303-FC3C-4D42-B0A4-476D15AC6A66_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The details are really popping and there is a pleasing vibrancy to each miniature. The figure on the lower left had some Contrast red applied, then covered up by Wraithbone. Errors in painting are quickly fixed by applying the primer color to the offending area and painting on the proper color more carefully. Games Workshop makes this easy by offering Wraithbone in spray cans as well as paint pots.</div></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Mixing Contrast Paints</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO1-uwayevSLJsL_1CdUxgZSmRU-WNlsDZhKFuAmuHfNpIzC6UvdS92QGuTTF3buTZOamLoIds9k6cSNszKDVX-_qorQc4F5b3nAMgBbAbL5Qp0SOQEhbm-Raj9eSNAhH0-HPNuwdiYkpXQ5dx3PdKv9F0DfwUkRhbTai1G3ipfDw9MoHEykZ9QZDS/s3987/11022B7B-0FB7-4FE4-8C12-707AE879625A_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Mixing Contrast Paints Warlord Plastic Shotte English Civil War SquadPainter Speedpainting" border="0" data-original-height="1741" data-original-width="3987" height="140" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO1-uwayevSLJsL_1CdUxgZSmRU-WNlsDZhKFuAmuHfNpIzC6UvdS92QGuTTF3buTZOamLoIds9k6cSNszKDVX-_qorQc4F5b3nAMgBbAbL5Qp0SOQEhbm-Raj9eSNAhH0-HPNuwdiYkpXQ5dx3PdKv9F0DfwUkRhbTai1G3ipfDw9MoHEykZ9QZDS/w320-h140/11022B7B-0FB7-4FE4-8C12-707AE879625A_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The first red I picked (CP Flesh Tearer's Red) didn't work out. For the pants I mixed Basilicanum Grey with Creed Camo, Wyldwood, and Black Templar to get muted, desaturated colors. To lighten a color, just thin the color with Technical Contrast Medium to let the light primer show through.</div></div><div><br /></div></div><div>The speed of the Contrast Paints is already apparent. It doesn't take any time at all!<h3 style="text-align: left;">Quickly Finished</h3><div>Here are the three figures on their white caps that I painted with Contrast Paints. Adjacent to them are figures painted in the Foundry 3-step method. I was able to complete the second two in under an hour. When zoomed in really close you can see the eyes, etc. on the Foundry-style figures. But from a foot away that disappears and the Contrast Painted models shine like gems. They are beautiful.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVAot0ZmP4C1dl9IkeSXtISQEBmRhLqdqp_24UpLMdybkQBwXjFvLFzCL47JzWb1pFJrIOufFnFXWShUjydGmP25BOlDHCPwOBqGS6o3q8DYUre-kWEUau0vFbD80DtAeYtzMAfyjfS0NtJxrpSoJRoksru9nJcxyM9L5hQiptCT-glM7ACNeyUA-4/s3314/40A2D7A9-82A2-4728-A677-25D3A22CE60C_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Squadpainter Perry French Historical miniatures GW contrast paint" border="0" data-original-height="1747" data-original-width="3314" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVAot0ZmP4C1dl9IkeSXtISQEBmRhLqdqp_24UpLMdybkQBwXjFvLFzCL47JzWb1pFJrIOufFnFXWShUjydGmP25BOlDHCPwOBqGS6o3q8DYUre-kWEUau0vFbD80DtAeYtzMAfyjfS0NtJxrpSoJRoksru9nJcxyM9L5hQiptCT-glM7ACNeyUA-4/w400-h211/40A2D7A9-82A2-4728-A677-25D3A22CE60C_1_201_a.heic" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Once I undercoated with Corax White spray and drybrushed with Vallejo White, over half of the model was complete. The thing that slowed me down was brush control. If I made a mistake, I had to go back and fix it with white and then re-apply the color. Brush control takes time to master, but I noticed I was much faster on my third figure than I was on my first.</div><div><br /></div><div>The only applied highlight was the white. I added a few strokes here and there on the pants and belting. It took less than a minute per figure. The metals were done in the old fashioned way: black undercoat and then Army Painter metallic paint.</div><div><br /></div><div>This experiment was a huge success... so much so that I decided to try out this technique on some upcoming English Civil War figures.</div>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-49102246986879420972022-06-22T05:46:00.002-07:002022-06-24T11:32:11.471-07:00Paint Systems for Napoleonic Miniatures<p>Last Christmas I purchased an Elegoo Mars 3 printer and I love it. I spent time cranking out Forest Dragon Warmaster minis, Alien space suited victims, and 15mm WW2 armor for my friends. While admiring the beautiful STLs available to sci-fi and fantasy enthusiasts, I lamented the dearth of quality 28mm historical sculpts.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Found Them!</h2><p>That changed when I stumbled across Piano Wargames' beautiful <a href="https://pianowargames.de/" target="_blank">Napoleonic sculpts</a>. While I nosed about their site, I found their tutorial which advocated using GW Contrast Paints to get a quick, quality result. I decided to try it out on a Perry French infantry figure.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">GW Contrast Paints for Historical Miniatures</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFkZVpyA1WG9Vw2t-1eYJIchZfOMu-GSu9W1dgVWfeNrUKNmB6UZYJJGp0s7F7_u4YYmHr8yTKzGSl2YTrntn6pyZXo9GZsR5Adn7uK85LNxvF1N-Rx7vI95ICWUwnWlFnsF7zKFwpg8SuZ9T1N0eQLFT9iwKvQP98Crl7xpWv0B-4VGgarhM0mnda/s4032/73ED8247-B45E-4E05-91CC-C86ECBAE5AAC_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Games Workshop Contrast Paints on Historical Miniatures SquadPainter Napoleonics French Infantry" border="0" data-original-height="1802" data-original-width="4032" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFkZVpyA1WG9Vw2t-1eYJIchZfOMu-GSu9W1dgVWfeNrUKNmB6UZYJJGp0s7F7_u4YYmHr8yTKzGSl2YTrntn6pyZXo9GZsR5Adn7uK85LNxvF1N-Rx7vI95ICWUwnWlFnsF7zKFwpg8SuZ9T1N0eQLFT9iwKvQP98Crl7xpWv0B-4VGgarhM0mnda/w400-h179/73ED8247-B45E-4E05-91CC-C86ECBAE5AAC_1_201_a.heic" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The results speak for themselves. All colors (on the central figure on the white cap) were a single coat of CPs onto a primed Corax White miniature that was then drybrushed with white. After the Contrast Paints were dry I did some black lining with CP Black Templar and painted a few lines of white for highlights. That's it.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Fast. Very Fast.</h2><p>The central figure on the white cap was completed in under 40 minutes. If I were doing a unit I could probably get the per-figure time into the 20 minute range.</p><p>Look at the difference between the figures in the picture. The ones on the right and in the rear are done in the Foundry Method: black prime and three highlights. Those took hours to complete. The ones on the left are Base-Dip-Highlighted. They are lovely, but they took a long time to finish as well... and they are kind of brown due to the Army Painter Strong Tone dip.</p><p>The central figure is beautiful, vibrant, and fast... it's perfect for wargaming!</p><p>What do you think? Are GW Contrast Paints the answer to a wargamer's prayers?</p><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-61250332559094642242022-06-19T19:58:00.002-07:002022-06-20T05:04:55.342-07:00Bicorne English Civil War Shotte circa 2006<p>While digging in my Pile of Shame for 28mm ECW figures for Pikeman's Lament, I stumbled across a figure I painted up a long, long time ago.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Early Beginnings</h3><p>In the mid-2000s I learned about the Foundry Method for painting in the 3-layer style. My first attempts coincided with my group's interest in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. It was an era I knew nothing about. But my friends were interested, and the Bicorne miniatures were fantastic, so I ordered a few packs and gave it my best shot (shotte?).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXWy6Y3BApzOcigCM8wR23jALEYh-cvF1YAKjbbhu_OihrrOSntNT-F-wh_2RBCb909ut4WwvJsOyAx8tYD6afBYOtUJALAkl3ktaPHK3goV8YUkbw-bdnnybvF5r5ttrWMxSfRA08rKzVtWCVTjGGgFb2wypx4ILLjGqHnhfPUdhMKmZtnQbALva2/s1662/A7CAD55A-0487-49A4-AD92-0CB3582D6B68_1_201_a.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Foundry method Shrimproll Bicorne ECW Squadpainter" border="0" data-original-height="1426" data-original-width="1662" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXWy6Y3BApzOcigCM8wR23jALEYh-cvF1YAKjbbhu_OihrrOSntNT-F-wh_2RBCb909ut4WwvJsOyAx8tYD6afBYOtUJALAkl3ktaPHK3goV8YUkbw-bdnnybvF5r5ttrWMxSfRA08rKzVtWCVTjGGgFb2wypx4ILLjGqHnhfPUdhMKmZtnQbALva2/w320-h275/A7CAD55A-0487-49A4-AD92-0CB3582D6B68_1_201_a.heic" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I followed the Foundry method as best as I could, but there were bumps. The yellow required 5-7 thinned coats to cover the black. I wasn't sure where to put the highlights. I was unfamiliar with the parts/equipment of the model. It took many hours to finish.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Accentuate the Positive</h3><p>However, I was pleased with the outcome at the time... and now. I used Martin Robson's brilliant recipe for the face, and I really like the grain on the musket stock. </p><p>It's interesting to see where I was back then and where my painting is now. I just finished up some ECW infantry where I used mostly GW Contrast paints. I'll post them up soon.</p><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-65290847534229451702022-03-13T18:25:00.005-07:002022-03-14T17:50:57.783-07:00Basing Steel Fist Miniatures<p>I backed the <a href="https://www.steelfistminiatures.com/" target="_blank">Steel Fist Miniatures</a> Kickstarter for their new line of amazingly detailed 15mm English Civil War (or Thirty Years War) miniatures. While I was waiting for the figures to arrive I decided on the excellent <a href="https://bigredbatshop.co.uk/products/to-the-strongest-for-king-and-parliament-rules-physical-edition" target="_blank">For King & Parliament</a> ruleset by Big Red Bat.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Basing Basics</h3><p>I just needed to sort out the basing. I'll be using 2mm MDF. The mat that I purchased had a 150mm grid on it, so I couldn't go over a 50mm base-width (shotte + pike + shotte).</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjFp2q2hR3Q_M8cEIhf-IbnZ5yvB1CyH9AFVzvQ6inkbfBfi0HDsVtWO2SJjhw6cto_bye3d1PxmoF8UX_NYh4HwQzYYAFdA3OUJstzO2w2JecRWhSGBuQaZFvcE7QUU21aCR1LPw0BDwTBBRA6RRuR2ct8FAiHcdyP5lFyjAqK3LWxmhgmINUltOae=s3560" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Steel Fist English Civil War 15mm miniatures" border="0" data-original-height="1812" data-original-width="3560" height="163" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjFp2q2hR3Q_M8cEIhf-IbnZ5yvB1CyH9AFVzvQ6inkbfBfi0HDsVtWO2SJjhw6cto_bye3d1PxmoF8UX_NYh4HwQzYYAFdA3OUJstzO2w2JecRWhSGBuQaZFvcE7QUU21aCR1LPw0BDwTBBRA6RRuR2ct8FAiHcdyP5lFyjAqK3LWxmhgmINUltOae=w320-h163" width="320" /></a></div><p>I also wanted to get a lot of figures on there to show a mass of troops. I initially came up with 45 wide by 60mm deep bases (or maybe 65mm to make room for command swords). I am roughly following a speed painting method <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mTTSpdXwMA" target="_blank">I saw on YouTube</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNwXjttIWqFxWl-ktZfHOgZSEObhnCTP_eUyw4sRh8JfPBhAwSdPOQX-MyG5CGcXUH0lr-RinqSvEepDz3Iay_12ZZ_rwrhlwbaVIyBSpfdET2VmgZlcR6J68-iWNCfRau9HC6JK5qdE/s2048/IMG_0667.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="ASOIAF Lannister Guardsment SquadPainter VGC Basecoat Speed Painting Tutorial" border="0" data-original-height="1251" data-original-width="2048" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNwXjttIWqFxWl-ktZfHOgZSEObhnCTP_eUyw4sRh8JfPBhAwSdPOQX-MyG5CGcXUH0lr-RinqSvEepDz3Iay_12ZZ_rwrhlwbaVIyBSpfdET2VmgZlcR6J68-iWNCfRau9HC6JK5qdE/w320-h195/IMG_0667.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I started with spraying them with Vallejo Game Color 11 Gory Red thinned in my airbrush. Then I painted the boots and gloves a charcoal color. Next was a chocolate brown for belts, pouches, scabbards, and straps. A black/brown was used for the inside of the shield. I used AP Gun Metal straight onto the silver bits… without a black undercoat! Next was AP Greedy Gold on the gold bits. The hair is an orangey brown. </p><p>The skin is AP Kobold Skin. I really like that color. It seems just right: not too peachy, not too light. It’s hard to mix using VGC, so it is one of my exceptions to my “Only Use VGC” rule. I try to stick to VGC because otherwise I'll purchase every pot of paint under the sun.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Army Painter to Vallejo Game Color Equivalents</h3><p>Here are my Army Painter (AP) to Vallejo Game Color (VGC) recipes. I used a speed painting method on him: base coat, wash, then a few highlights. He looks good considering the short amount of time I took.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU8zOxdK5w_RZTzZ-0KRxWBLrJsbAawi2S4QnowluLatGnxhOsXcSkqfzFu-vgG5D62XtnFuD9CcwPmCkCy9SM5WKt5D7Q_FT5YPyyfypQe6U3QqlfbX4AGYCAwBZL54gPOdnO1g93GqM/s2533/IMG_E0424.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="SquadPainter Lannister Guardsman box set speed painting Vallejo Game Color" border="0" data-original-height="1242" data-original-width="2533" height="157" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU8zOxdK5w_RZTzZ-0KRxWBLrJsbAawi2S4QnowluLatGnxhOsXcSkqfzFu-vgG5D62XtnFuD9CcwPmCkCy9SM5WKt5D7Q_FT5YPyyfypQe6U3QqlfbX4AGYCAwBZL54gPOdnO1g93GqM/w320-h157/IMG_E0424.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Vallejo Game Color and Army Painter Paints</h3><div>I used Vallejo Game color paints for everything except the wash and the metals. For those I used Army Painter. Their metals cover pretty well... no black undercoat was used here. They were painted right over the bright red undercoat with a single layer, which is pretty impressive. They look okay... but then the AP Strong Tone (on the gold) and AP Dark Tone (on the silver) do their work and smarten everything up. Any blotchiness is smoothed out and the recesses are darkened. <div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0v6CLrgAUkCjUrwa4Tawp4OnNN7Kwr0UxCkQVuMW0sQr5eNG-2G021R8UqLyvDOU25xfsRXmTYyyHO6uwHZxra7TzDRKvClTgzpBOeFPBmVfFVw04z0zQCuQM07wQ2RqHsT2Si8K8AWw/s2048/IMG_E0421.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="SquadPainter Lannister Guardsman ASOIAF speed painting Vallejo Game Color" border="0" data-original-height="1701" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0v6CLrgAUkCjUrwa4Tawp4OnNN7Kwr0UxCkQVuMW0sQr5eNG-2G021R8UqLyvDOU25xfsRXmTYyyHO6uwHZxra7TzDRKvClTgzpBOeFPBmVfFVw04z0zQCuQM07wQ2RqHsT2Si8K8AWw/w320-h266/IMG_E0421.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>A few quick highlights later and the metals are done. Any time you can skip a step or two (no black undercoat and not having to coat the metal multiple times) on a large unit of figures saves time; that's speed painting!<br /><p><b>Next up is painting the rest of them. One down, 23 more to go.</b></p></div></div>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-63713396213278187452021-04-08T20:59:00.000-07:002021-04-08T20:58:33.761-07:00Blood Bowl Dwarves - Finished<p><b>My dwarves are finished!</b> After the Agrax Earthshade wash dried, it only took a few quick steps to get them to the end zone.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSTiTbcxUSHWwqG3ynyHh2cxSYhffO_oekIHdXTvpTDZr6viK4iISAV2p6zNFjKKmEOsxFOuFIEEO9g4Zt7JbZ0sT_QvToZBGhkJanhn20E0nlxJPMmf_jPj89PEyClnKE2usZGXnn9oo/s2048/IMG_E9684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Blood Bowl plastic Dwarf Speed Paint Quick Tutorial SquadPainter Basing" border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSTiTbcxUSHWwqG3ynyHh2cxSYhffO_oekIHdXTvpTDZr6viK4iISAV2p6zNFjKKmEOsxFOuFIEEO9g4Zt7JbZ0sT_QvToZBGhkJanhn20E0nlxJPMmf_jPj89PEyClnKE2usZGXnn9oo/w320-h240/IMG_E9684.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Drybrushing the Main Highlights</h3><p>Each miniature has a dominant color, and that was drybrushed on after the wash was dried. The Slayers had orange drybrushed on them. The blonde beard had ivory applied. The regular dwarves had a bone color drybrushed on their armor. A few had a second color carefully drybrushed on with some intentionally applied flicks. </p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Skin</h3><p>The skin was finished off with the flesh color reapplied to the raised areas. Then a thinned lighter color was dabbed on for the highlights. This isn't very quick, but faces and hands are focal points on a miniature and deserve extra attention.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Gems</h3><p>I tried a few options for the gems, and then found a quick solution:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Base with bright silver metallic paint</li><li>Wash 5x with Army Painter Blue Ink thinned 1:7 with water to make it a glaze.</li></ol><p></p><p>The silver gives a little sparkle to the edges of the gems and the glaze pools in the different facets. It was easy and effective.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Basing, Transfers, and Varnish</h3><p>The bases were finished off with the retro green sawdust flock and some brown grit. The minis had their decals applied and then were coated with two shiny coats of Humbrol gloss. They were finished off by brushing on one coat of Army Painter Matte Varnish. I avoided the gems with the matte varnish to retain their sparkle.</p><p><b>I'm very pleased with the way they turned out. </b>Drybrushing an ivory/bone color over the entire miniature was a great way to save a ton of time instead of highlighting everything individually. Taking extra time on a few key areas makes it look like I took much longer on the figures than I actually did.</p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9026822421016607332.post-3362317158048907822021-04-04T10:09:00.008-07:002022-03-22T05:18:02.432-07:00Blood Bowl Dwarves – Ink Washed<p>Here are my GW Blood Bowl Dwarves after I quickly brushed the miniatures with a wash of undiluted Agrax Earthshade.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8_TUirrw_jmKEjCtnKWysqF_euZ-k14aLOPZXDDTi5JueAjKQm9LLiIZFQo6d1fZkAcu5Y2QOcYI3ybCU9ps-wyML6vJj1Ki0cHm02yJhsztpQ1IBnNZkUHcRF805zRXQ2Pd2LFXDvgQ/s2048/IMG_E9634.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="SquadPainter BB Dwarf Plastic GW washed Agrax Earthshade" border="0" data-original-height="1217" data-original-width="2048" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8_TUirrw_jmKEjCtnKWysqF_euZ-k14aLOPZXDDTi5JueAjKQm9LLiIZFQo6d1fZkAcu5Y2QOcYI3ybCU9ps-wyML6vJj1Ki0cHm02yJhsztpQ1IBnNZkUHcRF805zRXQ2Pd2LFXDvgQ/w320-h190/IMG_E9634.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Speed Painting Step Two - The Wash</h3><p>As you can see from <a href="http://squadpainter.blogspot.com/2019/10/blood-bowl-dwarves-basecoating.html" target="_blank">my previous post</a>, the wash makes a huge difference. I've never painted 24 figures so quickly before. They look really good together. The wash/medium mix was magical.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Second Thoughts</h3><p>I'm not too sure about the basing. This was my first attempt to do snowy bases. I think I'm not used to a sparse base. What I might do is purchase a winter game mat and see how it looks in context with snowy pines, etc.</p><p><br /></p><h4 style="text-align: left;">Next up: Lannister Guardsmen!</h4><p><br /></p>SquadPainterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14430903626225535338noreply@blogger.com0
